Our speaker at the this month’s general meeting will be Simone Akila, leader of Black Lives Matter – Santa Barbara. She will be discussing the organization’s activities and efforts within Santa Barbara County and provide us with ideas on how we can facilitate their efforts. Simone joins us from a foundation of community building and connecting. She is a proud Gaucho alum since graduation and has been dedicated to investing and uplifting marginalized groups. Currently, she supports adults with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses work towards independence and vocational opportunities.

During her time outside of work, she facilitates Santa Barbara’s local Black Lives Matter group and leads a monthly women’s circle, centered on empowering women to lead community organizing. In addition to this, Simone is also a regional board member of Just Communities and El Centro (Lower Westside Community Center).

She is a strong believer that everyone is needed to create the communities we deserve. Her current projects include supporting El Centro’s Escuelita, a free spring and summer program for Westside youth (based on Freedoms Schools of the Civil Rights Movement), as well as reforming the Santa Barbara Police Department’s and the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s current Use of Force policy.
